Unusual Gardening
Meet gardens that can water, fertilize & warm themselves.
Tomatoes, Highbush Cranberry, Mallow, Hibiscus, Sweet Flag, Willow, All-Heal, Strawberry & Bee Balm are planted in this "frog haven" naturally fed by a creek.
This German style bed is comprised mostly of wood and compost with only a thin layer of top soil. The wood serves to hold the moisture for the squash, brussel sprouts & cucumber that grow vigorously here the first year.
This special "blueberry bed" is a real gem. Blueberry's are very shallow rooted and don't like to be drown though they need constant water. We dug a trench and sank several logs into a [damp] area of ground with a very high water table. We buried the logs and mounded pine-rich mulch over them to plant the acid-loving blueberries into. Incredibly successful, this technique mimics blueberry's natural growing location in a bog.
This "deadwood swale" terrace involved the digging of several trenches and burying of wood and compost with sand and topsoil. We created wood chip paths and planted the steep banks with "green manure" crops. The beds were planted with a seed blend of perenial greens, beans and annual herbs. Other annuals including edible flowers, sweet peas, tomatoes and squash were incorporated in available niches.
