MADD Issues Drunk-Driving Star Ratings for US States

In the 2016 edition of its annual publication highlighting advances in drunk-driving legislation, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) issued a star-rating system to each state in America based on its overall lawmaking approach to curbing drunk driving.

According to MADD, several factors influence its star ratings. Some of these include a state’s commitment to setting up sobriety checkpoints, legislating more severe punishments for individuals who are convicted of drunk driving with children in the car, and implementing laws that administratively revoke the driver’s licenses of drunk drivers. The highest star ratings (4.5 stars) were awarded to Arizona, Maryland, Mississippi, and West Virginia.

In other data released in MADD’s report, the organization revealed that close to 10 percent of drunk-driving accidents happen over the holiday season -- i.e., between the Thanksgiving and New Year’s holidays. Individuals can read MADD’s Report to the Nation at www.madd.org/2016campaignreport.
