Three Tennis Footwork Tips for Beginners

Footwork is perhaps the most important aspects of tennis. These three tips will help you improve your footwork on the court, giving you a solid foundation to build up your other tennis skills.

1. Stretching - When it comes to tennis, footwork goes hand-in-hand with flexibility. Begin off the court by regularly doing stretches to warm and flex leg muscles. It does not require much effort to throw a few stretches into your morning routine, or during a commercial break while you watch your favorite show. Aside from improving your game, staying limber helps prevent muscle strains and other leg injuries.

2. Minimize Movement - Novice players often overstep shots, or spend so much time moving to the ball that they miss their chance to hit it. Generally speaking, if you have the choice between taking three steps to reach the ball, or simply pivoting your outside heel and stepping into the shot, go with the latter. It gives you more time to line up, prepare, and execute a good shot.

3. Shoes - Simply wearing the right kind of shoes can make all the difference. For starters, some courts will not even let players play wearing the wrong shoes, like those with lugged or aggressive soles. Investing in a quality pair of tennis (specific) shoes will offer greater support and agility on the court.
