Society for Pediatric Research-The Young Investigator Coaching Program

As associate executive director for the American Academy of Pediatrics in Illinois, Dr. Ramesh Sachdeva oversees numerous processes and is responsible for the establishment of the Quality Initiatives department, of which he is the medical director. Dr. Ramesh Sachdeva is affiliated with many professional organizations, including the Society for Pediatric Research, of which he is an elected member.

The Society for Pediatric Research (SPR) strives to accommodate the career development of researchers in pediatric fields. One way in which this goal is achieved is through the Young Investigator Coaching Program (YICP). This program connects researchers at the beginning of their careers with established mentors in their field of study.

Over a period of three years, YICP mentors and mentees get together approximately four times a year, in addition to the annual Pediatric Academy Societies meeting. During this time, the pairs of researchers discuss topics relevant to the mentees’ studies; the mentees benefit from the experience and research knowledge of their elder partners.

In order to be accepted into the YICP program, mentee applicants must be in the first three years of their first academic position, currently pursuing research in the field of child health, and planning to continue a career in research-based scholarship.

YICP also provides financial support to accepted participants, whose doctoral degrees range greatly, from nursing, to social work, to psychology. The program covers both mentor and mentee registration costs for the PAS meeting, as well as the attendance fees at other career development events.
