50th Anniversary of Machine-mail Sorting South Africa

                                                       Postage Stamps
Artist brief: Stamp 1 should show the first mail-sorting machine installed in Pretoria in 1967, and stamp 2 should show part of a modern Siemens sorting machine currently in use at the South African Post Office. Reference photographs should be used as a basis and as a stepping-stone for creating original imaginative artwork that portray the mechanical process through which the mail is sorted. When the end buyer of the stamp sheet looks at the artwork, there should be no doubt in their minds that the artwork communicates mail sorting by machine.
My approach to this task began with the idea of using a stylised mechanical gear. I then modified it in such a way that it can be used to create a pattern but also a single icon.
Commemorative envelopes: One commemorative envelope must be designed. The design should complement the stamps, elaborating on the same theme.
