Study Shows Veterans' Employment Challenges

In 2015, Christopher Dabney interned as a credit analyst at Ameris Bank in Gainesville, Florida. A former member of the United States Marine Corps, Christopher Dabney actively supports veteran-centric charitable organizations, such as Disabled American Veterans.

Disabled American Veterans is a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization that is committed to providing a lifetime of support to all American veterans and their families. Since its founding in the 1920s, it has aided over 1 million veterans in a variety of ways, including giving them rides to medical appointments and helping them file for benefit claims.

In addition, the organization serves veterans by helping them find meaningful employment. Despite the overwhelmingly positive public perception of veterans, they have difficulty finding work because employers generally don’t regard them as assets in the workplace. This fact was noted in a study conducted by the communications and marketing firm Edelman. The study further reveals a growing disconnect between veterans and civilians in the past few decades, as evidenced by a decline in the number of CEOs who have had military experience.

In spite of this, some companies have made it a part of their business strategies to hire veterans. According to the CEOs of these companies, veterans form an integral part of their businesses and are consummate team players who make important contributions.
