The face of Kells

The face of Kells

This drawing is the result of my wanting to draw something in connection with "the book of Kells". I like the style of this particular manuscript, I like celtic mythology, I like Ireland.

The colors are especially interesting, so I decided to go with the green-red-goldish illustrations and used this to draw a fictonial portrait of a woman, whose face seemed to be part of the book.

If you would like to give her a character, she could be a mystical keeper of the book, immortal, bound to the book and will only cease to exist if the book gets destroyed.
The drawing was sketched with pencil, lined with a fine liner, colored with watercolor and gold ink.
The background was then created with pastel colors. Mostly I scratch them into a powder and only use the pastel powder to draw and mix my colors.
