Gilda’s Club New York City (GCNYC) opened its doors to cancer patients and their families in 1995, offering them resources, support, and community. The organization was established in memory of Gilda Radner, the Saturday Night Live comedian, who lost her life to ovarian cancer in 1989. Since its founding, more than 11,000 people have visited the Clubhouse in Manhattan and other NY area locations.
GCNYC is a nonprofit organization, and it benefits from financial donations in support of its program. On July 12, 2016, it hosted Gildafest ’16: A Night of Comedy and Laughter to honor the actress, Melissa McCarthy. The event featured cocktails, dinner, and a show. Moreover, it raised more than $145,000 for the GCNYC’s comprehensive cancer program. The program in question gives cancer patients as well as their families’ free support. At the event, Melissa McCarthy made a speech, while Alan Zweibel spoke about Gilda Radner. In addition, Jill Fernandez spoke about her cancer experience.
