Research Finds Sports a Positive Influence For Youth

Los Angeles-based Neurosurgeon Ali Mesiwala, MD, serves his community of patients at Southern California Center for Neuroscience and Spine. And he takes his service a step further by supporting a variety of local charities. Among his work with nonprofits, Ali Mesiwala, MD, gives his time as medical director for the local branch of the Snoop Youth Football League, an organization founded by rap superstar Snoop Dogg.

Recent professional studies have found that young people who participate in organized team sports not only enjoy improved physical health, they grow their capacity to succeed academically as well.

The Snoop League and similar programs provide underserved urban young people the excitement of playing a sport while developing teamwork skills, self-confidence, and respect for themselves and others.

Researchers in the field have frequently described the impact of such programs in terms of the “five C’s:” increased connectedness, competence, character, confidence, and caring. For generations, coaches and teachers have noted their belief that the discipline inherent in sports training contributes to a growth in all these areas. They have additionally mentioned the character-building benefits of learning to lose – and win – gracefully, to follow directions, and to work toward a goal with a group.

Young men and women who develop their personalities along these lines become better prepared to become successful, empathetic adults with deep bonds to their communities.
