The brief: to create an animated GIF that illustrates a particular opinion.
I chose social media as a topic to research for this project, and started by looking at some of the ways we use social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. I was initially interested in looking at how some Instagram users 'curate' their Instagram accounts to portray a particular image, often an image of themselves that isn't how they really are. While researching popular Instagram tags, I found that a lot of the posts on Instagram feel very much like advertising.
I noticed that, especially with fashion and makeup brands, a lot of people imitate the type of advertising photos bloggers and celebrities post, which leads to there being a lot of almost identical images on Instagram, with the brands tagged and logos clearly visible.
The point I want my GIF to make is that whether we notice it or not, our Instagram feeds are full of product placement and (unintentional) advertising, and it can be hard to avoid it.
