Discovering more about other faiths and cultures is a passion for John Elliott. In 2000, he designed this icon, naming it the Alom (“Al-om”), to represent his personal faith and philosophy. The design implies the endless complexities of the Universe, the cylical nature of Life, and the profound ambiguities of Consciousness. The unique word Alom is an amalgam of the Biblical references to “Alpha” and “Omega,” the Arabic and Hebrew words for peace, “Salaam” and “Shalom,” respectively, as well as the Buddhist mantra, “Om”. Om ॐ is a mantra and mystical Sanskrit sound of Hindu origin, sacred and important in various Dharmic religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Alom as a name has only been found as that of a Maya sky god and one of the creator deities who participated in the last two attempts at creating humanity. In 2011, John had his Alom design tattooed onto his right shoulder.
