Through interviews with Rose Kennedy and other family members, friends, and associates, as well as 150 cartons of previously unstudied papers of Joseph and Rose Kennedy, Goodwin narrates the story of Irish immigrants from Boston whose family members would rise to fame and power.

It chronicles the baptism of John Francis Fitzgerald in1863, his rise to become a Congressman and the mayor of Boston, his family, and his grandson John Fitzgerald Kennedy, who ultimately became president of the United States of America.

The book vividly portrays its characters, including the young and politically astute Rose Fitzgerald and her calculating, self-made husband, Joseph P. Kennedy. Also told are the stories of Joe Jr., Kathleen, and Jack, three Kennedy children who had lives full of promises but instead met tragic endings.
