Ali Mesiwala, MD, is a respected Southern California physician experienced in neurosurgery. A consulting member of SI Bone, Inc., Ali Mesiwala, MD, has extensive experience in an innovative surgical approach, minimally invasive sacroiliac joint fusion. Published in October, 2015, a multi-center trial was undertaken on the effectiveness and safety of this approach in women with persistent post-partum posterior pelvic girdle pain (PPGP).
The condition PPGP affects approximately one-fifth of women who experienced peripartum-period back pain. In a majority of cases, the sacroiliac joint is the cause of the pain, and non-surgical treatment approaches prove ineffective for a significant number of women. The minimally invasive sacroiliac joint fusion involves the use of a series of triangular implants that are spray-coated with porous plasma.
The trial included 100 women without PPGP and 23 women with the condition. It found that PPGP subjects experienced a significant lessening of pain following SI joint fusion, as well as measurable improvements in functioning and quality of life.
