The Snoop Youth Football League, which played its first season in 2005, takes its name from superstar rap artist Snoop Dogg, who founded it as a means of counteracting the negative influences affecting inner-city children in Los Angeles. The singer, actor, and entertainment mogul, born Calvin Broadus, is originally from Long Beach. Among his most recent projects is the AOL online streaming series Coach Snoop, in which he travels cross-country with the team.

The league now hosts teams in Northern and Southern California, including the Long Beach Patriots, Crenshaw Colts, and Compton Seahawks.
