Mentorship Program for Law Students with Disabilities

Duke Ligon of Oklahoma City is the senior vice president and general counsel at Devon Energy. Focused on energy law, Duke Ligon of Oklahoma City is a member of the American Bar Association (ABA).

The ABA maintains an active mentor program to help law students with disabilities connect with legal practitioners in their desired area of practice. The National Mentor Program was started in 2000, then active in only a couple of law schools in Washington, DC. Now the program has expanded to accommodate law schools all over the nation.

Mentees for the program include both actual and prospective law students with disabilities, and law graduates with disabilities.

The aim is to give mentees an opportunity to learn from their mentors about the legal profession, specifically with regard to practice in areas of mutual interest. The mentor-mentee relationship offers guidance, support, and invaluable career advice to help the young lawyers carve their paths in the legal profession.

Prospective mentees are encouraged to apply for mentorship through filling an application specifying the mentor they prefer, with regard to their practice area, geographic location, and disability. Mentors do not have to be disabled. Mentors also complete an application with their desired mentee preferences. The information is then stored in the association’s database.

Matches are made in line with the specifications of both mentors and mentees. ABA will make an email introduction and from there both parties will be responsible for the progress of their relationship.
