Essential Mountain Climbing Gear

Charles Clement has been the president and CEO of the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) since 2012. When he’s not leading the Juneau, Alaska-based organization, Charles Clement enjoys mountain climbing.

Mountain climbing requires several pieces of essential equipment. Some basic mountain climbing gear that every beginner needs includes:

- Harness. With the exception of bouldering, all mountain climbing excursions require the use of a climbing harness. These harnesses have one loop for each leg and a waist belt to ensure climbers are secure. They also have a tie-in point in the front for the rope.

- Shoes. Finding the right climbing shoe largely depends on each individual’s climbing ability and location. Ideally, climbing shoes should fit snugly without being too tight. While they provide the necessary friction to get a good foothold, they are not good for walking long distances.

- Rope. A large variety of ropes are available. Dynamic ropes are the best for most climbers because they stretch as weight is applied. This helps dampen the impact of a fall. However, different ropes are better for rappelling or hauling items.

- Helmet. Special climbing helmets are designed to protect the head from falls or falling rocks and are extremely important for climbing safety. A good climbing helmet fits comfortably and rests flat against the head.
