Dr. Ramesh Sachdeva's profile

Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Units

American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) senior executive director Dr. Ramesh Sachdeva brings over two decades of experience to the Kansas-based organization and has led the development of multiple AAP programs and initiatives. In addition, Dr. Ramesh Sachdeva is the principal investigator for the AAP’s Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Units (PEHSU).

A grant-funded program that operates under the management of the AAP’s Division of Innovation, PEHSU addresses the lack of lack education that medical students receive regarding the dangers of environmental health hazards. While most pediatric residencies will touch upon topics like lead poisoning, the risks involved in environmental hazards such as air pollution and water pollution, climate change, mold, and polychlorinated biphenyls are not often not reviewed. Funding for PEHSUs began in 1998, which led to the development of PEHSU programs in other territories such as Mexico, Canada, Spain, and Argentina.

PEHSUs collaborate with healthcare providers, public officials, and parents to identify toxic exposure risks and potential prevention methods. They also provide consultation on medically managing exposures and deliver educational opportunities for parents and patients to learn more about the effects of chronic exposure to low-level toxic substances.
