Bernardo Dominguez Cereceres's profile

Bernardo Dominguez Cereceres Chose Business

Mexican businessman Bernardo Dominguez Cereceres got his start in finance and construction as a young man in the 1980s. Since then, he has built up a substantial career in these fields, as well as in the hotel industry. In the late 1990s, his work drew the attention of businessman Vicente Fox Quesada, who was then running for president under the banner of the center-right National Action Party, or PAN.

Mr. Fox initiated a meeting with Mr. Dominguez in 1999 at the latter’s home. Through such support, and that of many other voters, Mr. Fox won the Mexican presidency in 2000, the first candidate to do so in opposition to the long-ruling PRI (Institutional Revolutionary Party) in more than 70 years.

A native of Guanajuato, Mr. Fox had achieved substantial influence in the business community as the CEO of the Coca-Cola Company’s Mexican Unit and, later, as the head of its entire Latin American Division.

Mr. Fox’s 2000 political platform emphasized his goals of bettering the national economy and doing away with bureaucratic corruption. After his election, he worked to address the social ills of drug trafficking and criminal activity. In addition, a major effort dealt with improving Mexico’s trade relationship with the United States. Bernardo Dominguez Cereceres declined Mr. Fox’s invitation to join his cabinet, preferring to focus on his business interests rather than an entree into politics.
