Hikers can enjoy Starved Rock Trail year-round and bring their dogs as long as the latter are kept on a leash.
 
- Cap Sauers and Swallow Loop Trail: a 4.7-mile trail near Palos Park, Cap Sauers and Swallow Cliff Loop Trail is a moderately difficult trail that sees a fair amount of hikers. The trail is open from May to September and offers various activity options. Dogs are allowed on the trail, but hikers must keep them on a leash at all times.
 
- Little Grand Canyon Trail: located in Shawnee National Forest near Pomona, the Little Grand Canyon Trail is a difficult trail that is used by relatively few hikers. Open from August to November, the three-mile trail is mostly used to ice climbing and hiking. Leashed dogs are also allowed on the trail.
