Design Project Part 2

Neepsend Regeneration Part 2
Engineering Scheme Design 2012
The brief requiresthree main construction projects, a low or zero carbon, mixed use multi-storeybuilding, a low or zero carbon flagship supermarket and an iconic pedestrianbridge. All of these construction projects are to undergo option analysisleading to the production of scheme designs of chosen solutions in order toassess their feasibility. Further to thisground models, site investigation and drainage design will be conducted tofully adhere to the brief. Sustainability will be at the forefront of thedesign at all times to ensure that the impact of the development is minimised.

The aims of thedesign are clear, it should maximise profit for both developer and client, whilst producing a low to zero carbon development that is both practical andfeasible throughout the whole of its lifetime, from construction todecommission.

The method I used to design the multi-storey building.
The excel sheet I wrote to calculate beam valuesfor the multi-storey building.
Regular formal meetings were held as agroup. These included agendas and taking minutes. Gantt charts were also used to record progress and keep the project onschedule.  These were regularlyupdated so as to track tasks, keep them to deadlines so as to not delay othertask dependant project components.
There was also a system to keep trackof delegations and progress. This was created at the beginning of the projectidentifying the key components of the project and the breakdown of tasks withinthem. This table was updated at every meeting, recording progress of each taskand who was in charge of it. It was useful to compare to the Gantt chart todetermine if deadlines were being met. .
A tablewas used to assess the impact and probability of the identified risks. Thisallowed us to concentrate on the more likely or impacting risks and generallydismiss the low probability, low impact risks. We have identified the risks andoutlined controls that the client can employ to eliminate or reduce the risk.
Lessons learnt
· The importance of establishing aims and constraints at an early stage.
· Thorough initial research.
· The importance of agendas, minutes and Gantt charts and keeping up to date with group members’ progress.
· Chairing meeting skills to encouraging input.
· The structure and order of deliverables so as to present a clearer process and conclusion.

Things to develop further
· Technical knowledge.
· Providing support for struggling group members.
· Presenting skills.
