Ivor Ellul's profile

Petroleum Engineering Explained

Engineering executive Ivor Ellul is the Managing Director of CiSK Ventures, an oil and gas exploration and management consulting company based in Houston. Ivor received his PhD in petroleum engineering from Imperial College London.

The field of petroleum engineering primarily involves the design and development of methods to extract oil and gas from subterranean deposits. Petroleum engineers accomplish this in a number of ways, including drilling and injection of water, steam, chemicals, or gases into oil reservoirs. Petroleum engineers also use sophisticated techniques to evaluate well production and maximize profitability of wells.

As with many other technical professions, petroleum engineers can specialize based on their interests. Completions engineers focus on the end stages of well construction, while drilling engineers determine optimal ways to drill for oil and gas. Reservoir engineers analyze underground deposits and decide how to maximize the amount of oil and gas produced.
