Paper pop-up speaker

Kelli Anderson and Becky Simpson teamed up to create this paper pop-up speaker. The speaker's mechanical design comes from Kelli, who has a passion for functional paper pop-ups. The speaker's illustrations and packaging was a collaborative effort from both Becky & Kelli. Here's how they went about it creating the exterior design for the speaker together.
1. Becky sketched out several black and white abstract drawings like the three here. These were done to create shapes that could be abstracted for the covers and inside of the book.
2. Kelli took Becky's sketches, imported them into Illustrator, where she mixed them together and added colors.
3. Once a selection of patterns were created and colors selected, they went on to determining the jacket layout for copy & imagery.
4. They established a good understanding of how they wanted to design the jacket covers from hand sketches and moved over to Illustrator to mock them up digitally. Here are some of the several layouts they created.
5. With the jacket covers complete, they went on to select the visuals for inside the speaker covers, where the actual pop-up pieces were. They came up with almost endless color options.
6. They settled on the interior design and the kit was ready for print. Here's what it ended up looking like in it's complete form.

We took it to an event at SXSW and let people use the kit to make their own speaker.
