The concept of child abuse often generates images of physical punishment and emotional neglect. However, there are a number of smaller transgressions caregivers and guardians can commit without even realizing it. For example, ignoring a crying child or demonstrating frustration with a crying child can prevent the child from forming a healthy attachment with his or her caregiver. A child must feel loved and nurtured at all times, particularly when vocalizing distress through crying.

Caregivers must also learn to look after themselves in order to be prepared to care for their child. The trials and tribulations of everyday life do not stop once someone has taken on a caregiver role. Taking out frustration on a child is one of the most common, unintended examples of abuse, but it is very troubling and destructive. Friends and family of parents can also help to prevent child abuse by supporting new parents. The challenge of parenting is endless, and providing assistance can allow parents to collect themselves or reconnect with their partner before returning to the child.
