Harvey Seifter's profile

The Importance of Arts-Based Education

Based in New York, NY, Harvey Seifter is a senior fellow of the Learning Worlds Institute and the president of his own leadership and organizational creativity company. Harvey Seifter also serves as the director and principal investigator of the Art of Science Learning (ASL).

Since 2010, the Art of Science Learning has worked to increase scientific and mathematics literacy through innovative arts-based programs. With funding from the National Science Foundation, ASL recently established three incubators in cities across the United States to encourage communities to engage in STEM disciplines in new and creative ways. In Worcester, Massachusetts, the incubator studies transportation alternatives in the city’s EcoTarium. The Chicago incubator focuses on urban nutrition from its location at the Museum of Science, and San Diego’s incubator in Balboa Park examines water resource issues.

At the center of the Art of Science Learning is its commitment to arts-based education and the idea that developing creative skills and processes has a positive impact on a person’s ability to learn non-artistic disciplines. Studies have shown that achievement in arts correlates with academic achievement, innovation, and creative leadership. It also improves observational and communication skills, both of which are key for professional and academic success.
