Fiftieth Anniversary of Independence Commemorative Note

The partners at domus were among the three parties shortlisted, via an initial competition and presentations from select parties, to make submissions for the Commemorative Note as well as a New Note Series to debut later in 2015.

As The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has revealed the Official Commemorative Note, we would like to share with you the work we did and our proposed design.

While there are layers of being relevant to the past, present and the future the main theme of the design is ’Celebration’.

Simply put ours was a celebration of self, as a collective and as a nation unto itself with its unique identity & heritage but within the context of being one with a progressive global community.
The ‘Front’ with Gold Jewellery / Children Celebrating
The ‘Back’ with ‘Gidige’ — Celebratory Decorative Arches
The Security Window with Ulha / Flag Formation
The Security Window is framed by another piece of traditional jewellery, a gold ‘Ulhaa’, or bangle.

In the spirit of celebration it features the familiar formation of three national flags. In celebrations of national importance it is fairly common to see the national flag, in this formation, peppered throughout the streets and especially around areas where commemorative events are held.
A Word of Appreciation
To MMA and all the individuals and organisations who assisted us, sharing with us their considerable resources and time; thank you!
