Since his time in the U.S. Navy, Captain David Schnell has been active in his community. In addition to serving as the executive director of Christ Kitchen, a San Diego area nonprofit organization, Captain David Schnell is involved with Walden Family Services, which supports foster children after their emancipation.
One of the major pillars of Walden Family Services is its Independent Futures Program, which was created in 2001 to help those placed with Walden make a smooth exit from foster care. This grant-funded program serves more than 150 young adults, helping them develop autonomy and feel empowered. By giving these youth the opportunity to connect with others, including professionals, neighbors, and teachers, the program seeks to help these young people find a place in society. Efforts within the program focus on areas such as financial literacy and health, ensuring that these young people can enter society with the life skills they need to take care of themselves and live stable lives.
