The United States Navy (USN) can trace its history back to the Continental Navy established during the American Revolutionary War. The largest nautical fighting force in the world, the USN is currently comprised of more than 430,000 personnel, 300 underwater and surface vessels, and an additional 3,700 aircraft. Since the Revolutionary War, the Navy has played a part in virtually all U.S. armed conflicts, including the American Civil War and both World War I and World War II, as well as countless humanitarian initiatives.

The USN uses a ranking system for its personnel comparable to those used by other branches of the military. Under most circumstances, an individual joins the Navy as a seaman recruit (SR) and works his or her way up the ranks to the petty officer classes, culminating with the position of master chief petty officer of the navy (MCPON). There are a number of additional higher ranks an individual can achieve, ranging from the chief warrant officer ranks to Navy captain (CAPT). The fleet admiral (FADM) represents the highest position a member of the USN can achieve during his or her career.
