What to Expect in Bikram Yoga

New York resident Ana Docoito-Nelson joined Gramatan Management, Inc., in 2008 and received a promotion to her current position of property manager in 2012. Away from work, Ana Docoito-Nelson enjoys maintaining her health through the practice of Bikram yoga.

Performed in a heated room under the guidance of a certified instructor, Bikram yoga involves 26 postures that are organized and performed in a sequence, prompting increased oxygenation of the body. The practice improves internal organs, muscles, and ligaments by flushing out bodily toxins.

Individuals taking their first Bikram yoga class can expect to practice in a carpeted room that is approximately 105 degrees Fahrenheit and contains 40 percent humidity. Depending on the instructor and studio, the temperature may fluctuate to accommodate various levels of humidity. For example, when humidity increases, the temperature slightly decreases to balance the heat.

Each class begins and ends with a breathing exercise and lasts 90 minutes. Bikram, unlike other forms of yoga, allows instructors to provide hands-on adjustments to ensure students carry out each posture correctly. Students should remain in the room at all times to reap the full benefits of the environment and class.
