Sundance Film Festival Project

The Brief/ Designer Statement

The task was to design a series for the 2024 Sundance Film Festival ranging in size and
purpose.

When I was doing research about Sundance, I found out, It is a showcase for new work
from American and international independent filmmakers. The festivals provide an
opportunity for filmmakers, distributors, critics and other interested persons to attend
films and meet to discuss current artistic developments in film. Which means,
Sundance offers great opportunities, good movies and also great socializing. It also
takes a lot of hard work, focus and dedication to organize and present a movie in the
festival.

When I was thinking about all of those which Sundance offers, then I realized I should
do something about how to attract people saying there are opportunities, good movies
and great socializing all at the same time. When it comes to socializing, hard work,
dedication and focus, I couldn't think of anything other than bees, because throughout
history, bee symbolism has embodied focus, dedication, hard work, teamwork,
generosity, prosperity and fertility. That is how I ended up concepting bees and Sage lily
flowers to my design, since it is also a national insect and national flower of state Utah.
I want to create something very simple and soft and still give the message to attract
people. I had two directions for the color pallet. One was very soft and the other was
very vibrant. I ended up using the soft version since my theme had to do something with
bees and flowers. The elements that I used were simple shapes, colors, lines, size and
fonts to create contrast and highlight the most important elements of my design. I
mainly used Adobe Illustrator.

The whole idea behind my design is to welcome people, grab attention, make a strong
first impression, something unique and something memorable.
The Research

Sundance Film Festival, independent-film festival held in Park City, Utah , each
January. It is one of the most respected and celebrated film festivals in the
United States . The Sundance Film Festival began in September 1978 in Salt Lake
City , Utah, under the name Utah/United States Film Festival.

Who attends the Sundance Film Festival?
As for the number of attendees, the Sundance Film Festival typically attracts tens
of thousands of people each year. This includes filmmakers, industry
professionals, journalists, film enthusiasts, and members of the general public
who purchase tickets to screenings and events. Its 2023 festival was the first
time the Sundance Institute realized it had significant traction with people
between 18 and 34.

Festival attendees tend to be well educated—almost 80% are college graduates.
Approximately 27% have attained a master’s degree and about 8% have a
doctorate degree.

About 43% of 2015 Festival attendees said their annual household income was
more than $100,000; a percentage slightly lower than the 50 percent reported in
2014. Nonresident attendees were more likely to report having high annual
incomes—51% compared with 33% of Utah residents.

Most of the people attending the Festival are U.S. residents, the largest share of
which live in Utah, California and New York.

88% of the nonresident visitors surveyed said that attending the Festival was the
primary reason for their visit to Utah. Almost 28% of nonresidents said they were
visiting Utah for the first time and 49% said they would visit Utah again within the
next 12 months.

Although the Festival is an entertainment-driven event, most people who attend
the Festival are not affiliated with the entertainment industry. Just 16 percent of
those surveyed said they were entertainment professionals.

Slightly more than half of those attending the Festival in 2015 were males (53%)
and (47%) were female.

RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES In UTAH
• Almost half of nonresidents surveyed said they intended to ski or snowboard during their stay. This equates to about 15,239 people. The most popular resorts for skiing were Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley.
• About 15 percent of locals surveyed said they would include skiing or snowboarding as part of their Festival experience. The Park City Mountain Resort and resorts located in Salt Lake County were the ski areas of choice for Utah residents who intended to ski or snowboard.

What is the point of Sundance Film Festival?
The festival's role has always been to present new and interesting stories from
new and interesting filmmakers. It is a showcase for new work from American
and international independent filmmakers . The festivals provide an opportunity
for filmmakers, distributors, critics and other interested persons to attend film
showings and meet to discuss current artistic developments in film .
This year, Sundance organizers say they received a record 17,000 films from
around the world submitted for consideration. That's a lot of growth; the first year
featured "maybe 25 films" and a handful of documentaries and "maybe 100
people wandered around out in front of the theater," Robert Redford told NPR in
2017.

Sundance Film Festival is also knowing there's a chance that you'll see a celebrity
— either on the stage during a Q&A, or randomly in a Park City restaurant, or
signing autographs on Main Street.
