Corporal Wojtek

Corporal Wojtek was none other than the 500-600lb brown bear that served in WWII. He was adopted by the 22nd Transport Company’s Artillery Division in the Polish 2nd Corps on April 8, 1942, after they traded a Swiss Army knife, canned beef, and chocolate for the young cub from a shepherd boy. Wojtek soon became a great moral boost for the soldiers. In the camp he was known for drinking beer, eating lit cigarettes, and taking cold showers.

In 1944, when the division was being shipped to Italy, Wojtek officially enlisted as a private in order to accompany them (surprisingly, pets are not allowed in the military). Wojtek became a cult hero during the Battle of Monte Cassino where he was seen on the front lines carrying artillery crates and shells. In response, the regiment changed their insignia to Wojtek carrying an ammo shell. Eventually, Wojtek was even promoted to corporal for his service and bravery.

After the war, Wojtek was not retired to Poland for fear that he would be used for communist propaganda (which was not in fashion at the time). Instead, he accompanied many soldiers from his unit to a relocation camp in Scotland, quickly becoming a member of the community. About a year later, when troops were demobilized, he moved to the Edinburgh Zoo. Wojtek spent the rest of his life there, bringing joy to many visitors.
