Source of Hope Provides Overlooked Services

Source of Hope began in 1997 as a joint effort of Pilar and Stephen Robert. It does not limit itself to philanthropy in one country or discipline; instead, it awards grants to organizations worldwide, including Ethiopia, Jordan, and Haiti.

The Roberts travel to donor locations to personally match the residents to charities specializing in fulfilling underserved needs. As of 2024, the Foundation operates in eight countries, with volunteers training local allies to continue the services after those volunteers leave. The Foundation rebuilds communities affected by natural disasters. It also caters to populations with a history of funding challenges.

To maximize its impact, assistance from Source of Hope manifests in two forms: one-off and recurring. After Hurricane Dorian in 2019, Source of Hope funded MercyCorps’ efforts to restore utilities and rebuild homes. In Jordan, volunteers teach children STEM skills and sports in the country’s refugee camps and provide psychological counseling. The program aims to help children healthily cope with trauma.
