The phenomenon of anonymous or obscured selfies, labelled often as ‘headless torsos’ or ‘faceless selfies’ is a common occurrence on social media, particularly amongst the gay community across gay dating apps. I argue that such photography challenges our understanding of identity and recognition. These ‘faceless faces’ manifest a sub-genre within portraiture and will soon situate themselves in the history of art and photography.
