Penn State News - Decoupled Drupal + Static Gatsby
Custom Design and Infrastructure on Drupal 8 Publishing Platform

Penn State News, a digital platform that drives 7 million page views each year, was powered by a highly customized and complicated back-end. With 250 content editors and a syndication network that includes more than 20 Penn State campuses across the state, the platform needed to be optimized for speed and real-time collaboration.

The project involved migrating their website to a decoupled architecture using Gatsby as the front end and Drupal as the content management system. Improvements in performance and user experience were achieved by leveraging Gatsby's features, such as Gatsby Link for client-side routing and static site generation.

The integration between Drupal and Gatsby was facilitated by the Gatsby source Drupal plugin, which allowed seamless data sourcing. Gatsby Hosting is well-suited for deploying large static sites efficiently, with an emphasis on speed in handling deployments. The scalability features introduced in Gatsby v4, such as Server-Side Rendering (SSR) and Deferred Static Generation (DSG) are crucial for handling large and complex websites.

The collaboration with Gatsby and Mediacurrent generated significant contributions to the open-source community. Specifically, contributions were made to the front-end and developer experiences with Gatsby, improvements in content authoring workflows, and the importance of pixel-perfect previews.

Advantages in cloud hosting through this strategic partnership, lended to the ability to segment different parts of the infrastructure. Other areas of focus were on Content Security Policy (CSP) headers, optimizing static queries, managing large numbers of nodes, build times, and image handling on S3. Deferred Static Generation (DSG) was leveraged as part of comprehensive caching and authentication strategies.
