Sheffield at a glance
Sheffield is a lively, student-centric metropolis with a diverse nightlife and a lively music scene. Living there you’ll be surrounded by history, as the area is believed to have been inhabited for almost 13,000 years. Sheffield was known for its production of cutlery already in the 14th century and during the Industrial Revolution it acquired the nickname Steel City. The Industrial Revolution brought factories and wealth but also pollution and overpopulation that made George Orwell call Sheffield the ugliest town in the Old World.
Sheffield has come far from those days though, and in recent years it has transformed into a vibrant cultural powerhouse. The regeneration of public spaces has created a post-industrial landscape rich in sculptures, statues and water features that flow through the city centre. Between your studies you can explore Sheffield’s innovative music scene by watching a band at the Leadmill, the legendary music venue where the Arctic Monkeys blossomed into rock stars. Wind through the foothills of the Pennines as a tram takes you out of the city centre to Lower Sheffield, a diverse and bohemian suburb rich in leafy open spaces.
Sheffield is great for student life
Sheffield is the fifth largest city in the UK and has a vibrant community of 60,000 students, so it’s a great city to study in. The cost of living is well below the national average and with so many students around, lots of places offer student discounts.
Sheffield offers many student bars, clubs and live music venues, but also plenty of
green spaces - 60% of the city’s area is covered by parks, gardens and countryside, with the beautiful Peak District National Park also close by.
