Depiction of the old French Quarter in Hanoi

Design Statement
I designed this poster to portray the idea that Lucielle Tenazas had come to Vietnam, and this is her reaction to Vietnamese architecture, which was heavily influenced and indoctrinated by the French during the Indochina period.

The use of warm colours, which is close to a vintage look, combined with the filter applied on the chosen photograph of French architecture in the French quarter of Hanoi, suggests the nostalgic idea that is often suggested by Tenazas about the colonised culture she always wants to explore and implies in her works. This poster reacts to the adaption and alternation of Vietnamese after the colonised period on the leftover architecture of the Western such as the French. This is like an encouragement for the Vietnamese to keep changing and develop on the lost and the old stuffs.

The aesthetic style is Lucille Tenazas, who employed basic Sanserif fonts with imaginative type arrangements. Therefore, I try to adopt her idea by using the simple font as Acumin-pro and then rasterising and manipulating them to create a balanced and elegant typeface look that represents Tenazas. Tenazas often employed character consistency to create unity in her work, thus most of the letters are represented in this design are sticking strictly to the primary font family with a rigid and sharp looking. She creatively organized the text with a limited colour palette, particularly a subdued colour tone, to elicit meaning and feelings that support her message.

Consequently, I employed her technique by extracting some colours from her previous design using the Adobe Colour Wheel tool to mimic her familiar colour palate with precision. I also adopted her idea of hiding some of the letterforms by cutting part of them to evoke the audience’s sense of curiosity, so I cut out some of the letters in the word "Intertwine" to inherit her profound technique. The word "Life" in the background is also being blurred to adapt to her style in Lucielle’s "Moto" series. The use of element lines and the connection of those elements to the edges of the poster are usually seen in many of Tenazas’s works.
