Madrid, one of Europe’s most vibrant capitals, is a perfect fusion of tradition and modernity. With a past rich in history, art and culture, this city has adapted to the times and embraced innovation. Today, Madrid is a 21st century metropolis, where its nightlife, modern dining venues and post-modern cultural spaces invite you to discover, experience and embark on a vital journey.
Based on this premise, AVANI Alonso Martínez stands as a tribute to the city of Madrid, its culture and its identity. The art that adorns the walls of the hotel, the interior design and the very image of the place evoke the essence of a unique and vibrant Madrid: a city of contrasts in constant change and evolution.
I was privileged to be commissioned by NH Hotel Group to create several series of artworks and murals for this project. It was an opportunity that filled me with excitement, as Madrid is my hometown, the place where I grew up and lived most of my life.
Mural “Fiestas populares de Madrid” (Popular festivities in Madrid)
The first graphic work created for this project is located in the reception, the place where the first contact with the hotel takes place.
This work, a mural developed with collage or patchwork techniques, shows a composition of original 20th century posters of popular festivals in Madrid.
Posters from the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s referring to the most important festivities and open-air dances in Madrid. From this material, visually readapted through different effects of ageing and deterioration, I imagined a puzzle of posters in which they merge through the fictitious recreation of a series of tears and rips in the paper.

Inspiration and meaning
This mural tries to reflect the soul of the most popular Madrid, a lively, streetwise, eclectic Madrid, open to everyone… the spirit of a city that has been and is optimistic and vital, a city full of energy and passion.

Series of works “Gatos de Madrid” (Madrid Cats)
For the ground floor of the hotel, specifically for the public areas near the reception, I was commissioned to create a series of five works on the theme of cats and Madrid. The works reflect both scenes set in the context of the city, in iconic places such as Plaza de Callao or Gran Vía, and traditional phrases or sayings referring to Madrid.
*(original names are in spanish and some of them refer to traditional expressions from Madrid that may not be completely understood when translated into english).

The works in context
Vinyl
“Churros and hot chocolate”
Vinyl design for the wall of the hotel restaurant. The creative message is based on one of the symbols of Madrid: chocolate with churros. A tradition turned into an institution that could not be missing in this creative tribute to the city.
