A Tale of Faith : Documenting Theyyam - "The Other God"
Being a street and documentary photographer has allowed me to encounter moments that profoundly impact both my photography journey and personal life. A recent highlight was documenting Theyyam in Kerala this year, immersing myself in the vivid imagery of bright red costumes, fierce face paint, and layered makeup unfolded a mesmerizing spectacle, revealing a glimpse of "The Other Gods"
My admiration for the country deepened as I marveled at the rich heritage, experiencing a mix of fear, confusion, and wonderment. Long harboring the desire to document Theyyam, the opportunity finally arose, and the unfolding rituals left me in disbelief at the transformative power of faith, turning mere mortals into gods.
Embarking on a thrilling scooty journey with a friend to Theyyam locations, the captivating scenes of fierce action, fire play, and pulsating energy added another layer of spectacle. Inspired by Rishab Shetty's "Kantara," delving into the similarities with Bhoot Kolas in Karnataka's Tulunadu, I discovered the unique regional presence of Theyyams in the Malabar region of Kerala.
The movie's narrative unveiled a timeless theme of good prevailing over evil, showcasing the unwavering faith of Kerala's people who sought communion with the divine through Theyyam. Post-ritual performances, the Theyyam figures patiently listened to devotees' troubles, offering predictions by merely holding their hands, a mysterious process that I still struggle to comprehend.
Despite the complexity, I hold a firm belief in the unimaginable power of faith and love to navigate life's tribulations. This journey has not only deepened my understanding of human connections with the divine but has also instilled a profound respect for the intricate tapestry of beliefs. While grappling with personal questioning post-live rituals, I acknowledge the significance of respecting others' feelings and faith in their gods.
