Augmented Reality Project

Augmented Reality Project
Brief
For class we were assigned the task of creating an augmented reality experience that would be used to educated the audience about a specific topic.

Challenge
I looked at different topics that I could choice from. Ultimately I decided to go with something outside of my comfort zone. I wanted to challenge myself by doing a topic I wouldn't normally do. I made an augmented reality experience based on books from a little free library.

Role
Designer, Researcher

Application
Adobe Aero, Adobe Illustrator and Procreate

Sticker Design
For the sticker design I knew I wanted to make it similar to the augmented reality portion without giving away too much of what was going to be included. I decided to go with a stack of books because that was the main focus of the project. I put the words "Read Recommend Repeat" because the little free library is there for people who can either take a book to read or donate books. The person would take the book to read then return or replace it and the cycle would continue.

The idea of this project was that the audience would scan the sticker then they would be able to look through different books to help decide what book they would read next. Each book on this would be inside the library so they could take it to read. In theory the books listed would eventually rotate, because different books would be inside.
Location
The location I chose was on the outside of a little free library. I chose this because people who go to these enjoy reading. So a sticker that gives book recommendations would be useful to them. Not only did I put the sticker on the outside of the library but I also put them inside other books that are in the library.  The reader could take the sticker and scan it at home as well.
Research
After choosing an idea. I moved on to researching. Because my location was specific to a certain little free library, I decided to interview the owner of the library. I found out what books they read as well as asked about their opinions on the book. This allowed me to add information to each book to give insight to the audience on what book to choose.
Prototyping
I started out using using simple shapes to practice with the triggers in adobe aero. After that I used my real assets and graphics in Illustrator. I mapped those out by placing them where I would want them to be eventually in Aero.
Illustrations
These ten illustrations are inspired by the cover of each of the books chosen. I wanted to keep the illustrations minimal, as to not distract from the text while still keeping a cohesive style since the books are all so different.

Reflection
Overall I enjoyed this project. At first it was difficult for me to draw out the different frames I wanted throughout the experience. I think what helped was putting my assets into illustrator before Aero, so that visually I could see what I wanted it to look like. I thought it was fun being able to create something using AR even though it was challenging.
