TUMBLE
User Interface Design | 2021

This project was done as a group project with the aim of improving the overall quality of student life for students who stay in Hall.
First, we wanted to understand our users who actually make use of the laundry rooms in hall. We conducted online surveys and 1-to-1 interviews asking our target audience about their general feelings towards doing laundry, and the steps they typically take from the moment they decide they need to do their laundry till they finish the laundry process. We also asked questions about the types of situations that could arise, and finally any frustrations and areas of improvement for their laundry experience.
Our research findings showed us that students prioritise their work and school matters and will usually do their laundry when they have time. There is also a struggle to collect their clothes promptly because they would be occupied with assignments or studying while waiting for their laundry to be done.

In terms of pain points, a common frustration is going to the laundry room with their baskets to find out that no machines are available, or finding out that their newly washed clothes have been dumped on machine tops by someone else. They also report that they do not know how to report faulty machines.

When asked what they would hope to change about their whole laundry experience, most of them said they wanted to reduce the overall time wasted waiting around to do laundry, as well as to minimise chances of encountering a faulty machine.
After considering potential solutions, my team and I decided that a digital interface was the best way to fulfil the needs of the users. We came up with 3 solutions; an app, a telegram bot, and a laundry room dashboard and app. We did lo-fi prototypes and tested them with some of our users before finally settling on the third solution.
