La Jolla Premiering Musical Version of The Outsiders

Maintaining an active role in the San Diego, CA, community, Elliot Feuerstein has overseen the development of numerous commercial properties over the years. Contributing to various organizations, Elliot Feuerstein is a supporter of the La Jolla Playhouse, which is offering a world premiere musical version of The Outsiders, running February-April 2023.

Based on the classic S.E. Hinton book (as well as Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 film adaptation) the musical is directed by Obie-winner Danya Taymor. The coming-of-age story takes viewers back to late-1960s Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the dramatic refusal of blue collar “greasers” to conform in a society that seems bent on ensuring that they fail.

Spanning two weeks in the life of young teenagers, the narrative follows the divergent arcs of greasers Johnny Cade and Ponyboy Curtis as they arrange a rumble with the rich “socs.” Ultimately, Johnny must live with the consequences of killing one of his rivals with a knife, and how this tears his group apart.

The musical features a book by Adam Rapp, who earned a Pulitzer Prize finalist nod for The Sound Inside, and has music by Justin Levine (Moulin Rouge! The Musical) and the group Jamestown Revival. The Outsiders was originally scheduled to debut at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, but that event was canceled due to the pandemic.
