Note: "Ink wash" illustrations are exactly what they sound like: water-diluted ink, made in similar to "monochrome watercolor" painting techniques. They can have the best of both worlds: crosshatching and nuances, as well as fine ink spray, splatters, scratchboard effects to make "white highlights," and even final touches with white paint (whether acrylic, white pencil, pastel, or anything else). Here the sky is the limit! Contrary to "plain ink" illustrations, their file is big: 5mb vs 500kb for plain ink, a.k.a. "1-bit scan." Just like color illustrations, nuances demand "file size" space. They could be saved as 8 basic colors/nuances (similar to DOS games) or 16 million (photo quality). The bigger the file-size = the better the print quality. However, in the world of digital eBooks (especially graphic novels), the file size could be murderous! Do you want a 300-page book to be 1GB or 300mb? Well, even a 300mb is too big! It will quickly fill in your eReader's hard drive (phone, Kindle, Nook, laptop, etc.). Hence, the solution is... "flash colors" (like in 2D animation or Adobe Illustrator). That is, less nuances as possible, which but compromises on the illustration's artistic quality, so... I can't do that, though many have switched to "flash." As a fine artist, I prefer tradigital medium (drawing traditionally with digital brushes and computer paints). For more, feel free to contact me.
