Style Agnostic: Victorian Elegance in Modern Motion
In my exploration of fashion photography, I embarked on a journey to find inspiration for a series of images that would possess a distinct, fashion-forward approach. Immersing myself in extensive research, I found myself irresistibly drawn to the influential works of Richard Avedon. His contributions to the field left an indelible mark on me, profoundly shaping my vision for this photographic project.
What truly captivated me about Avedon’s style was his remarkable ability to encapsulate a sense of fluidity within each photograph. His images went beyond mere static captures, transcending into vibrant and dynamic narratives that effortlessly told stories. Whether they were striking and thought-provoking or lighthearted and whimsical, Avedon’s mastery of his craft consistently delivered a sense of awe-inspiring beauty, leaving a lasting impression on the viewer.
As my exploration continued, I discovered a fascinating connection between Avedon’s ethereal approach and the innovative techniques employed by visionary artist Lee Queen. Queen’s mesmerizing exhibition, titled “The Widows of Culloden Show,” featured the captivating use of a 19th-century theatre technique known as “Pepper’s Ghost.” This technique seamlessly projected the image of Kate Moss, merging historical theatrical artistry with the allure of contemporary fashion. The fusion of these artistic elements left a lasting impression on me, igniting a deep desire to recreate a similar enchanting atmosphere within my series of images.
With a clear vision in mind, my aim was to infuse this collection of images with a captivating Victorian charm, artfully blending it with a contemporary sensibility. I aspired to pay homage to the elegance and opulence of the Victorian era while imbuing the images with a modern twist. By skillfully juxtaposing traditional elements with an innovative approach, I sought to evoke a unique aesthetic that transcends time and resonates with the present.
