Almaz typeface

Almaz is a modern geometric sans inspired by the Ukrainian modernism of the last century. It has a dynamic shape of characters and an avant-garde nature. Almaz is designed for logos, titles, book covers, and branding identity.

The font was born from the search for the typographic character of the Ukrainian city of Poltava, which is primarily known for the Battle of Poltava—a sacred date in russian imperialism. The typographic landscape is diverse: it includes ustav, vyaz, inherited from Cossack ancestors and 'civil script' from moscow tsars and soviets. This combination of two contrasting aesthetics in one place sparked the idea for the font.

The modern forms of the characters, sharp spurs, thickened upper terminals, overall asymmetry, and a tendency towards bold decisions—these are the defining characteristics of Almaz. It allows for cutting through the confusion between uppercase l and lowercase I and even surviving a lightning strike in g letter.

The initial versions of Almaz incorporated ethnic motifs, were overly decorative, or had a wild character. Over the course of a year, it matured, but some remnants of those turbulent times remained in punctuation, diacritics, and alternates.

Typeface designed in 2020 by Kyrylo Tkachov and Serhii Makarenko in Alfabravo typefoundry.
