During the Occupy movement in Oakland, protestors occupied Frank Ogawa Plaza and renamed it Oscar Grant Plaza, which threatened to erase Frank Ogawa, a Japanese American who had been interned during WWII. I designed and distributed a double-sided postcard series using the popular “I am Oscar Grant” phrase. On one side of the postcard was a portrait of Oscar Grant titled, “I am Frank Ogawa,” on the other side was Frank Ogawa with the title, “I am Oscar Grant.” The point was not to make these two equivalent, but to stimulate conversation about possible connections and coalition-building.
