#17 - Goma - photography book

On November 20th, 2021, I was at home feeling anxious about the news that was unfolding in the newspapers regarding the current political scenario in Brazil. That afternoon, I decided to grab my camera and go out to photograph whatever caught my attention and what made sense to me at that moment. I spent the afternoon walking up and down Consolação Street and making several stops on Avenida Paulista. When I got home and started editing the photos, I realized that something was missing, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. After some playful editing, I decided to create "collages"/diptychs, and the photos began to take on a structure and a story. In the end, I had 13 photos and a draft of a project that extended throughout 2022 and is almost completed in physical book format.

Over the course of these months, I took over 1700 photos, completed several books and articles, but among them, my biggest inspiration was "São Paulo: the planning of inequality" by Raquel Rolnik, and it was like putting together a puzzle to arrive at the final result.

Thus, "Goma" was born.

October 28th, 2022, Friday, two days before one of the most important moments in the history of Brazil, the 2022 elections.

Goma is the culmination of a photographic drift through the city of São Paulo for a period of one year. Goma represents a political discontent experienced over the last four years. Goma is home. Goma is city. Goma is country. Goma is resistance.

"Red Alert" / "Brazil has worsened, everything is expensive, it's Bolsonaro's fault"
"Brazil is indigenous land"
"Enough with the deforestation"
"I hate police"
"The day becomes more beautiful when you resist"
"End the dictatorship"
"In a country of corruption, pixar is a crime"
"Feeling changes the meaning"
"Jesus didn't pass through here, He lives here"
"You make me feel better"
"Courage, artist"
"Respect the vote"
"Bolsonaro, the militia leader, gave the green light to the massacre, it's not chess, but the rifle shot is checkmate. Organize your revolt, let's go on the attack"
"The detachment is mine, and no one can take that away from me. It would be funny if it weren't happening to me"
"Paid wih money"
"Proud to be a voter" / "Bolsonaro didn't visit hospitals"
"Go vote"
