New Enclosed Regional Malls: Antelope Valley Mall
Antelope Valley Mall; Palmdale, CA
Antelope Valley Mall, developed by Forest City Development, George D. Zamias, and JC Penny Real Estate, received design awards of excellence from “National Mall Monitor” and the SADI award given by “Shopping Center World” and “Retail Store Image” Magazines.

Design Philosophy
As Senior Project designer, I was responsible for the overall design of the mall complex. This was inclusive of the interior, exterior, material selection, furnishings, parking layout and oversight of the team that worked with me.

Nestled in the Mojave Desert city of Palmdale, CA, my desire was to create an “oasis” ambiance on the interior with the use of large expansive space, a relaxing color palate, large fountains, and lush landscaping, with daylight streaming through fritted glass clerestories.

On the exterior, my intention was to maintain a blend of classic southwest Spanish mission architecture, through the use of form, color, texture and style, while deviating from traditional contextual forms with the introduction of blue Met-tile roofing, in lieu of traditional terra cotta roof tile.
Unique to the mall’s design were the extensive, rhythmic use of exposed steel “bents” in the stepped concourses, between the main fountain courts, that present higher visibility for merchant store fronts from a distance. Extended glass store fronts within the fountain courts give shoppers a sense of “open air” shopping, while maximizing the tenant’s lease space.
