Stick-and-ball games predate ice hockey by centuries, and these older games might have played an important role in the development of modern ice hockey. Stick-and-ball games spawned sporadically in different regions during the Middle Ages. However, before the 17th century and until the late 18th century, nobody used the word "hockey" in writing.

According to The Canadian Encyclopedia, the word "hockey" was first used in a written publication in 1773. It took nearly a century later before newspapers began referencing a type of hockey played on ice. According to data from the International Ice Hockey Federation, the first organized ice hockey game in history was played in 1875.
