NSCAD University Graduation Catalogue 2011

MARKS/MADE CONCEPTBook design, Art Direction, Project Management
The main focus of my Design Internship in Fall/Winter 2011. Special finishes include a heat-stamped gold foil on special coverstock that appears golden when viewed under sunlight.

High-difficulty, high-reward book features like a Specialty Index by Graduating Exhibition, Award/Scholarship, and Jobs/Clubs/Societies, as well as photographic surveys of tools and materials make this catalogue both memorable and commemorative in more ways than one.

Roles: Concept pitch and fulfillment, book design, photography, illustration, typography, copyright proofing; bridging communication between students, faculty, and university administration.
Students begin their Foundation Year learning how to create the basic “marks” of their discipline. Whether it is a line in charcoal on paper, a bezier curve on the computer, or the first wave of a sound recording, my concept for the 2011 Graduation Catalogue reflects the diversity of disciplines as well as the individual’s own process of thought and creation.
Above: The inside covers feature objects, tools, and materials found and photographed in the NSCAD studios.
NSCAD students bring together these unique marks and tools to create the diverse work that the catalogue publishes. In this way, my concept follows the students’ creative practices from beginning to end, giving value to every step of their exploration, application, and discovery.
The vector diagram (above) is numbered to correspond to a list that names each item on the inner cover (below).
