* * * This valley doesn’t exist anymore, now it’s covered with thick layers of hot lava * * *

With real Volcano sound from Meradalir Volcano Eruption in the background. Tune the music up, LOUD, to get the feeling in this dramatic song “Horfið Landslag”

This is what the valley looked like before the lava came rushing down the hills and filled it up with solid lava. – This sight you will never see again, so what’s next?

On 03-08-2022 at At 13:18, a volcanic eruption began in the western part of Meradalir, about 1.5 km north of Stóra-Hrút. The fire originates from a 360m-long fissure in the western side of Merardalahnjúk.

Meradalir are valleys on the Reykjaness Peninsula, east of Geldingadalir and were small clay flats before lava filled the valley in 2021. North of them are Meradalshlíðar and west of them is Kistufell. Meradalir lies lower than Geldingalir. On April 5, 2021, lava began to flow in Meradali, which came from a fissure that had opened the same day at Fagradalsfjall not far from where it originally began to erupt.

The place name Meradalir alone is easy to understand and perhaps no one will be surprised that both Meras and eunuchs, like sheep, have walked in this area since time immemorial.
