Kanga Series | 2022
/ (ˈkɑːŋɡɑː) / noun. A piece of gaily decorated thin cotton cloth used as a garment by women in East Africa.
The overall layout and design of the illustrations was inspired by the intricate patterns and bright colors on Leso/ Kanga prints. Swahili quotes and sayings are also a common feature displayed on these fabrics. Kangas often play a key role in major life passages such as birth, puberty, and marriage. I took a modern approach to the quotes by using common relatable phrases spoken today by most Kenyans.
Three things are assured: Love, Life and Death.
